La Facultat de Matemàtiques i Estadística dedica el curs 2007-08 a Bernhard Riemann (1826-1865): un matemàtic alemany del segle XIX que amb la seva brillant imaginació va introduir conceptes i obrir camins que encara avui són motiu d’estudi i recerca. La integral de Riemann, les equacions de Cauchy-Riemann, l’esfera de Riemann, el tensor de curvatura de Riemann, les superfícies de Riemann, el teorema de Riemann-Roch, la funció zeta de Riemann i molts altres més són conceptes i resultats que, en un moment o altre, entren a formar part del currículum de tot matemàtic en actiu.
Riemann estudià matemàtiques a les universitats de Göttingen i Berlín. Els professors que més li van influir van ser Dirichlet, Jacobi i Weber.
Avui dia resta oberta “la hipòtesi de Riemann”, una conjectura que, l’any 1859, Riemann va pronunciar sobre la distribució dels zeros de la funció zeta; l’Institut Clay té establert un premi d’un milió de dolars per a qui aconsegueixi demostrar que tots els zeros no trivials de la funció zeta, que és definida en el pla complex, tenen part real ½.  (Guia de l'estudiant: curs 2007/08. El Web Bernhard Riemann (1826-1865) ofereix una selecció de recursos disponibles a les biblioteques de la UPC i a internet relacionats amb aquest matemàtic. L’objectiu és per tant complementar bibliogràfica i documentalment les activitats que es duen a terme a l’FME durant aquest curs.
